According to the sales manager Kim Alexander, ASUS name originates from the English meaning Pegasus, which refers to the winged horse from the Greek mythology. The first three letters of the word were deleted to give the resulting name a preferred position in alphabetically ordered lists.

In 2004, ASUS announced that it had sold more motherboards than the sum of the sales of the other three leading companies in the sector, reaching 30 million. These figures, which include contracts with companies like MSI and Gigabyte Technology, were recorded at 104.86 million units. ASUS contributed to about 52 million units, followed by ECS with 20 million, MSI with 18 million, and Gigabyte with 16.6 million. MSI revised its orders initially estimated 16.7 million to 18 million units, according to the company.
